CNC insert model designations typically consist of 10 digits.
The first four letters represent the insert shape, clearance angle, precision grade, and rake face and center bore type. For example, D indicates a 55° rhomboid insert, N indicates a 0° clearance angle, M indicates the precision grade, and G indicates the rake face and center bore type.
The last six digits are divided into three groups, representing the cutting edge length, insert thickness, and tip radius, respectively. The letter at the end of the model designation indicates the insert material, such as P for general steel, M for stainless steel, K for cast iron, N for aluminum or non-ferrous metals, S for heat-resistant alloys or titanium alloys, and H for high-hardness materials.
For example, DNMG150408-MS: D indicates a 55° rhomboid insert, N indicates a 0° clearance angle, M is the precision grade, G indicates the rake face and center bore type, 15 indicates a cutting edge length of 15 mm, 04 indicates an insert thickness of 4.76 mm, 08 indicates a tip radius of 0.8 mm, and MS indicates the material.
This naming convention follows ISO international standards.
