Double-head center drills (also known as combined drills and countersinks) are short, double-ended tools used to create precise conical holes in the ends of workpieces. This process allows the material to be securely held between centers on a lathe or cylindrical grinder, ensuring high-accuracy machining.

These tools are generally classified into different styles based on the type of chamfer required:

  • Type A: Standard design that produces a simple 60° countersink angle.
  • Type B: Bell type, which features two chamfer angles (60° and 120°). The secondary 120° chamfer protects the delicate edge of the primary center hole from chipping or wear during heavy machining.

They are typically composed of either High-Speed Steel (HSS) for standard applications or solid carbide for harder materials like stainless steel and heat-resistant alloys.

FAQ

Q1: What is Type A vs Type B?

A1: Type A has a single 60 degree countersink. Type B adds a 120 degree protective chamfer to prevent edge damage during heavy machining.

Q2: What materials are available?

A2: HSS for general work and solid carbide for precision in hardened materials. Cobalt HSS for stainless steel.

Q3: How do I select the correct size?

A3: Body diameter about 1/8 of workpiece diameter. For small work under 6mm, use matching pilot diameter.

Q4: Can center drills be used on CNC lathes?

A4: Yes, we recommend solid carbide for CNC use due to higher rigidity and longer life at higher speeds.

Q5: Do you make special angle center drills?

A5: Yes, 45 and 90 degree available to order. Minimum quantity applies for custom angles.
