The twist drill is the most common type of drill bit used for drilling holes in wood, metal, and plastic. It features a cylindrical shaft with helical or spiral flutes that wrap around the body. These flutes are designed to channel debris and swarf (chips) out of the hole as the bit cuts.
Materials and Construction
Twist drill bits are manufactured using different materials depending on the hardness of the surface they are intended to drill into:
- High-Speed Steel (HSS): The standard workhorse bit for home DIY and general shop use. It performs excellently on wood, plastics, aluminum, and mild steel.
- Cobalt (M35 HSS): An HSS alloy mixed with cobalt that greatly increases heat resistance. Ideal for drilling harder metals like cast iron or stainless steel.
- Titanium-Coated: Standard HSS bits coated with titanium to reduce friction and increase wear resistance, which prolongs the bit's lifespan.
- Solid Carbide: Extremely hard and heat-resistant bits used primarily in high-precision, industrial manufacturing.

Point Angles and Design
The tip of the twist drill (the point) features cutting edges called lips. The standard point angle is 118°, which works well for soft metals and wood. Harder materials often require a 135° split-point, which centers itself automatically and allows for rapid penetration with minimal pressure.
Usage and Limitations
While twist drills are incredibly versatile and are commonly used in both Twist Drill Bits - The Home Depot and industrial machine shop settings, they are not the ideal tool for every application:
- Metal vs. Wood: Although frequently used for wood, standard twist drills tend to wander, skid, or skate across a wooden surface if a pilot hole isn't first drilled. For pure woodworking, Brad Point Bits are preferred because their sharp center spurs prevent wandering.
- Maintenance: Twist drills must be periodically withdrawn from deep holes to clear built-up swarf to prevent the bit from binding or breaking.
- Sharpening: Dull twist drill bits can be sharpened, but require precision to ensure both cutting lips remain equal in length and centered, otherwise the drill will cut oversized holes

FAQ
Q1: What is the difference between 118 and 135 degree points?
A1: 118 degrees is standard for soft materials like wood and mild steel. 135 degree split-point is self-centering for harder materials like stainless steel.
Q2: Can you supply reduced shank drills?
A2: Yes, for applications where the shank needs to fit a smaller chuck.
Q3: What coating for aluminum?
A3: Uncoated bright finish or DLC coated for better lubricity and chip release in production.
Q4: Do you carry metric or inch sizes?
A4: Both metric from 1.0mm to 60.0mm and inch from 1/16 to 2 inches.
Q5: Can you make extra-long twist drills?
A5: Yes, with flute lengths up to 300mm. For deeper holes, consider our gun drill series.
