The forming tap (or roll tap) molds internal threads by displacing material rather than cutting it. It produces no chips, resulting in 15–25% stronger threads and a significantly longer tool life. This method is best suited for highly ductile materials like aluminum, copper, and soft steels.
How Forming Taps Work
Unlike standard cutting taps that use sharp edges to slice away metal, forming taps have a fluteless, lobed design. As the tap rotates into the pre-drilled hole, its lobes press against the metal, forcing the material to cold-flow into the thread profile.
Because no material is removed, there are no metal chips to evacuate. This makes them ideal for both through holes and blind holes, as you never have to worry about chips packing at the bottom and breaking the tap.

Important Limitations
Restricted Material: Forming taps only work in ductile materials (usually under 36 HRC). They should never be used on brittle materials like cast iron or high-silicon aluminum alloys.
Higher Torque: Because you are physically displacing solid metal, the process requires two to three times more torque than cut tapping, demanding a highly rigid machine or setup.
Specific Drill Size Required: You cannot use standard drill charts. You must use a slightly larger pre-drill hole (typically 5% to 8% larger than the minor diameter) to accommodate the displaced material.
