The saw blade milling cutter, commonly known as a metal slitting saw or slotting cutter, is a thin, circular cutting tool specifically designed for your milling machine to cut deep narrow slots, slit materials, or part off parts. These tools are securely mounted on a specialized arbor and require precise speeds (often ~400 SFM for HSS in aluminum) to operate safely without binding.

These cutters come in a variety of styles tailored to different machining jobs:

Plain Metal Slitting Saws

Feature straight, un-dished sides and cut exclusively on their outer diameter (OD), making them perfect for screw slots and shallow cuts.

Staggered Tooth Saws

Engineered with teeth that alternate their set (left and right) to provide excellent chip clearance. These are ideal for deeper, wider slotting where chip packing is a risk.

Side Milling Saws

Have teeth on both the OD and the sides, which prevents the blade from binding or rubbing against the workpiece sidewalls.

Corner Rounding & Angle Cutters

Used for specific profile processing and beveling.

When selecting and using a saw blade milling cutter, keep these best practices in mind:

  • Material and Coating: Available in High-Speed Steel (HSS) (which offers great toughness) and Carbide-tipped options for harder materials and higher speeds. Look for coatings like Titanium Nitride (TiN) or Nitriding for enhanced heat and wear resistance.
  • Arbor Fitment: Ensure you have the proper stub or standard arbor that matches your machine's spindle taper (e.g., R8, Morse, or straight shank) and the cutter's bore diameter.
  • Speeds and Feeds: Because the cutter is very thin, it is crucial to calculate the appropriate feed rate. Too low of a feed causes rubbing and premature dulling; too high of a feed risks chipping the teeth.
  • Conventional vs. Climb Milling: Conventional milling (feeding the work against the rotation of the cutter) is typically recommended for safety to prevent the workpiece from pulling the cutter forward into the cut.
