The polycrystalline diamond compact (diamond composite plate) is composite matrix, abbreviation PDC.

It is a functional material formed by sintering diamond powder and tungsten carbide substrate under ultra-high pressure and high temperature conditions. It combines the high hardness, wear resistance, thermal conductivity of diamond and the impact resistance of tungsten carbide, and is widely used in the field of wear-resistant tools such as oil drill bits and cutting tools.

The composite material in which a thin layer of polycrystalline diamond is adhered and bonded to a tungsten carbide substrate is called a diamond composite sheet, and is denoted as PDC. The diamond composite sheet possesses the extremely high wear resistance of polycrystalline diamond and the high impact resistance of tungsten carbide. Moreover, the diamond layer can always maintain a sharp cutting edge, and thus is very effective for use in soft to medium-hard formations in petroleum and geological drilling. The diamond content in the composite sheet is as high as 99%, so the hardness and wear resistance of the diamond layer are extremely high. Its Nyquist hardness is (6.5 - 7) × 104 megapascals, and even higher. The thickness is very thin, generally controlled at 0.5 - 1 millimeters. It is vertically soldered onto the drill bit, with a sharp cutting edge and always maintaining self-sharpening, and is also called a micro-cutting tool drill bit.

Development Direction

 

 

1. The polycrystalline diamond layer keeps thickening, increasing from less than 1mm to 2-4mm, and the product's lifespan also improves. The petroleum composite diamond layer of Zhengzhou Xinya and Henan Yalong has reached 4mm, representing the most advanced level in China.

2. The diamond grains become finer, and the comprehensive performance of wear resistance and impact resistance improves.

3. By optimizing the process or removing cobalt, increasing the heat-resistant layer, etc., the thermal stability is improved.

4. The optimization of the interface structure improves the interface stress.

5. The product diameter keeps increasing, improving the synthesis efficiency.

6. The sintering effect is improved, reducing performance differences.

7. The special-shaped composite sheets, such as multi-diamond-layer composite sheets, helmet-shaped composite sheets, ridge-shaped composite sheets, conical composite sheets, and arc-shaped diamond composite sheets, have been developed by domestic large-scale composite sheet manufacturing enterprises like Zhengzhou Xinya and Henan Yalong. These new diamond composite sheets greatly improve the impact toughness of the diamond composite sheet without changing the wear resistance, and have occupied most of the domestic market.

Artificial diamond composite sheets belong to the category of super-hard materials. The term "super" here is not specific and covers a wide range. Super-hard materials are those with very high Rockwell hardness (HR), Brinell hardness (HB), and Vickers hardness (HV). The HR of common 45# steel is 30-60, and the hardest is natural diamond. This concept covers a wide range, including high-hardness steel, high-hardness ceramics, artificial diamonds, and so on.

Performance and Cutting Characteristics

 

 

1. The hardness is HV7500-9000, second only to natural diamond. Moreover, its hardness and wear resistance are consistent in all directions and there is no need to select the direction. Its strength is supported by high-toughness hard alloys, and the composite bending strength can reach 1500 Mpa.

2. It has very high wear resistance, with a wear resistance that is 60-80 times that of hard alloys. When cutting non-metallic materials with high hardness (HV > 1500), its tool durability is extremely high.

3. It has a low friction coefficient. The friction coefficient between diamond and non-ferrous metals is 0.1-0.3, while that between hard alloys and non-ferrous metals is 0.3-0.6. Thus, when using PCD tools, the cutting force and cutting temperature can be reduced by approximately 1/2-1/3.

4. It has very high thermal conductivity. The thermal conductivity of diamond is 146 W/M.K, which is 1.5-7 times that of hard alloys, and can significantly reduce the temperature in the cutting zone and improve the tool durability.

5. The linear expansion coefficient of diamond is very small (0.9-1.18 * 10(-6) mm/mm. temperature), approximately 1/10 of that of general steel (11 * 10(-6) mm/mm. temperature). Moreover, due to the sharp cutting edge, the cold hardness phenomenon on the machined surface is small, about 1/3 of that of hard alloy tools. Therefore, the processing accuracy is good.

6. Due to the particle size diameter of the polycrystalline layer being generally about 2-0.5 micrometers, its cutting edge sharpness is not as good as that of natural diamond tools. Therefore, the processing accuracy is lower than that of natural diamond tools, and can only reach surface roughness Ra0.2-0.05 micrometers. However, it can be made into larger-sized blades for forming processing.
